The Patricians

The Patricians is a monthly discussion group open to all Catholics. Its aim is to deepen our knowledge of the Catholic Faith and help us to explain it to others, in line with the teachings of the Church.

Each session starts with a prayer. Then a paper or talk (strictly limited to 15 minutes) on the subject for discussion is given by a lay person. This is followed by an orderly discussion of the topic in which all are welcome to participate. After a short break for light refreshments, a second talk is given by the spiritual director, who is present at the whole meeting. The meeting is chaired by a legionary.

The Melbourne Patricians group is one of several around the world and meetings are usually held on the fourth Saturday of the month from 2 to 4pm. Location: Magnificat House, 456 Queensberry Street, North Melbourne (near the corner of Chetwynd Street). mentone80yrs 150On the 7th September, 2013, the Praesidium of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was 80 years old. We celebrated the occasion on the following day, a Sunday, the 8th September, 2013. If the 8th had been a weekday it would have been designated as the Feast of the Nativity of Our Holy Mother and Queen of the Legion. Father John Walshe, the Parish Priest of St. Patrick and the Holy Angels Church in Mentone celebrated Mass at 11:00 am during which he gave a very insightful homily on the Legion of Mary and how well it operated in his parish caring for souls.

On this Memorial of Pope Saint Leo the Great, we celebrate a courageous successor of Saint Peter, a man who wielded the Keys of the Kingdom that Christ entrusted to the fisherman of Galilee. Pope Leo was a teacher and scholar, a great preacher, and we still have some of his beautiful sermons. He was a skilled opponent of the heresies that were tearing at the Church in the fifth century. He was a leader and protector of the people amidst drastic social changes that happened as the Roman Empire fell apart. He confronted the barbarian leader Attila the Hun whose army was heading towards Rome and the city was spared.  Today, to mark his feast, six tall candles burn on the altar where his relics rest, on the left side of St Peter’s basilica, at the far end of that great church.
